Benefits of Yoga

Many times people wonder, “What are the benefits of Yoga?” There are numerous benefits to performing any form of active exercise that requires the body to be energized and engage the muscles to perform activities.

Specifically, the Benefits of Yoga are as follows:

• Reduces feelings of stress, depression & anxiety
• Calms the nervous system
• Improves strength, balance & flexibility
• Tones muscles & strengthens core
• Improves brain function, mental toughness, and overall Focus
• Reduces pain and enhances the body’s immune system
• Improves lung capacity
• Provides a sense of calm, peace, and balance
• Lowers blood pressure & stress levels
• Increases self-awareness

Reduces Feelings of Stress, Depression & Anxiety

The human body is very complex and is made up of connected systems. The brain is responsible for controlling the body and ensuring that harmony is maintained. A reduction in blood flowing to the brain can lead to a decrease in positive emotions. Through the increase of physical activity, dopamine is released from the brain. The release of dopamine is directly related to feelings of positivity, a reduction in feelings of stress, the temporary removal of depression, and a reduction in feelings of anxiety.

Calms the Nervous System

One of the six systems in the body is the nervous system. The nervous system is responsible for transmitting electronic charged signals to different parts of the body ultimately terminating at the brain. Through our daily interactions, stress, decrease in physical activity, medical conditions, or other dynamics of life, our nervous system can become overly stimulated. This can lead to many conditions and feelings that need to be addressed. The nervous system and muscular system both are positively impacted by the movements performed in Yoga, and the long-term effects can assist in a reduction of overly active nervous systems and sustaining normal nervous system functions.

Improves Strength, Balance & Flexibility

There are many muscles that must work together to allow the body to perform the most basic of operations. Their muscles can weaken over time if not used and exercised. Performing isometric activity can help to improve the strength of these muscles safely.

Tones Muscles & Strengthens Core

The strengthening of the core and visibility of the core muscles is accomplished through the isometric extensions and static positions allowing muscle contraction. Strength is a direct and positive result of consistency in multiple sessions over a period of time. The visibility of muscles results from a prolonged and consistent activity that engages the entire body.

Improves Brain Function, Mental Toughness, and Overall Focus

The brain ties together all 6 of the systems that make up the body and provides harmony and homeostasis if all systems are in optimal condition. The increase of physical activity that allows the body to improve blood circulation to the brain will result in increased brain functionality and performance. Improved functionality of the brain allows it to better control the body and improve the overall harmony of all the 6 systems of the body.

Reduces Pain and Enhances the Body’s Immune System

The blood in the body is responsible for carrying nutrients throughout the body. A positive increase in blood flow will allow the blood to provide more nutrients efficiently to the many parts of the body. Pain receptors of the body employ the nervous system and indicate areas of the body in need of attention from the Immune System or the Cardiovascular System. Through an increase in blood flow parts of the body that require attention can receive increase nutrients and the warming relaxing calm sensation that comes from the flow of blood.

Improves Lung Capacity

The function of the lungs is to provide oxygen to the blood. The heart helps to pump the oxygens to many parts of the body that need this oxygen for repair and functioning. The increase in breathing allows the lungs to expand and contract thus improving the functionality of the lungs to accept oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. Prolonged engagement of the lungs improves the capacity and ability of the lungs to perform. Increased lung functions improve regular breathing and help heart functions.

Provides a Sense of Calm, Peace, and Balance

By using a physical activity that allows the brain to actively engage the extremities of the body through the engagement of the six systems of the body, balance is created. This balance leads to internal peace and calming throughout the body. The balance of the body’s systems creates homeostasis and allows the body to positively manage daily challenges.

Lowers Blood Pressure & Stress Levels

Through actively engaging the cardiovascular through exercise and increased lung activity, the improvement of the heart is achieved. This leads to a reduction in the sitting and standing heart rate, as well as a decrease in stress reactional activity. By allowing the mind to control the body through harmony and homeostasis, the 6 systems of the body can be distressed naturally.

Increases Self-Awareness

Allowing the mind to control the body can increase respect and appreciation of one’s body and mind. Thus increasing feelings of positivity and self-esteem in one’s ability. The sustained inner appreciation of one’s body leads to the outward radiating of positivity to others. Positivity is not only intoxicating it is also contagious and can lead others to an interest in what activities are being performed to increase positivity. The harmony of the body provides the body with an internal and external radiance.
